In this guide you will learn how to set up macOS The New Way Using The Proxmox Hypervisor.
Prerequisites For Installation
- A spare laptop/desktop computer with access to a browser
- A USB Flash Drive (8GB+)
Step 1 – Installing Proxmox
Before configuring and installing macOS we first need to install Proxmox. To do this first head over to the Proxmox Downloads page here to download the latest ISO Image.
The latest version as of this guide is Proxmox VE 8.2 – There are two ways to download the ISO either directly or through a torrent. Please choose a way to do this (easiest way is directly downloading). Then allow a few moments for the ISO to download on to your device. One Proxmox has downloaded please follow on below to learn how to get a USB Flash Drive ready and prepare a bootable installer.
Preparing The Proxmox Installation USB
To prepare an installer first download the Belena Etcher program from the Belena website here. I recommend downloading the portable version of this application as this means it will not need to be installed on your device. The process is the same for preparing the USB on both Windows and macOS.
Once Belena Etcher is downloaded and opened you should see a screen like this:
Select ‘Flash from file’ and select your Proxmox ISO that you downloaded. From there. Click ‘Select Target’ and pick from your USB list. (Do note that the USB you plan to use will be wiped so any sensitive data will be lost. Also make sure to select the correct disk) Then simply click ‘Flash!’
After a little while you should see a screen like below. If you do great! We are now ready to plug in our USB and start installing Proxmox on our Computer! If you didn’t get a screen like so please retrace your steps carefully before proceeding.
Once you boot up your computer enter your boot menu like below and select your USB Drive from the list.
You will then be greeted by this screen below! I’ve you’ve gotten this far well done! Select the graphical install option like below!
Once greated with the screen below have a read through the terms. We’re going to agree to them but do this at your own risk.
Select your disk from the dropdown. Be sure you select the correct disk as any data on the disk you select will be destroyed Then click ‘Next’.
On this next screen below select your language, time zone etc. Then select ‘Next’
On this screen enter a secure password and an email address. Then select ‘Next’
On this screen you can leave everything as default but set the DNS Server to ‘8.8.8.8’. Then select ‘Next’
Then finally on the screen below. Select ‘Install’
Once installed your PC will reboot and you will see a screen like below. The URL Listed on screen needs to be typed in on your spare device like your laptop.
Once the URL is typed into a web browser on a spare device (making sure to include https:// and the port 8006) you should be greated with a screen like below:
Enter the username root and the password is the one you set in installation. Then click on ‘Login’
If everything is done correctly you should be greated with a screen like this:
First head to updates, remove the enterprise repositories as shown below:
Once the enterprise repositories are disabled we need to add the ‘No-Subscription’ ones. Do this by clicking on ‘add’, selecting ‘no-subscription’ from the drop down and clicking on ‘add’ again like shown:
Your Proxmox shall then look like this:
Then go over to the shell and paste the following command:
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y
Step 2 – Purchasing and using our One Click Script
You can get started with our next few steps by purchasing our one click script from here. Once you have the script it shall come with a PDF to show you how to get set up on Proxmox with the script. Once you’ve done all of the steps in the PDF. You shall see a screen like this:
We shall first go over step 1. Select that and choose the appropriate CPU in your system. The script should run through and you should see a run step 2 notice afterwards.
After step 2 completes, you need to blacklist your GPU drivers. A link will be provided in the script but if you missed it please visit here.
Regarding step 3, download one of our templates and wait for it to finish. Once it’s finished select number 6 to exit the script and head over to ‘local’ then ‘Backups’ restore this backup.
